Living Will (Advance Directive)
Definition
A written statement of the medical treatments you would or would not want if you became seriously ill and unable to speak for yourself.
A living will typically addresses CPR, mechanical ventilation, tube feeding, dialysis, and comfort care. It expresses wishes; it doesn't appoint anyone to act. That's why most people pair it with a healthcare proxy.
State forms vary; many states accept a Five Wishes document, which is plain-language and covers spiritual and personal preferences too.
